Carin Balint

Wild Organic Way Cafe (WOW)

Carin describes her youth as fraught with illness, she was constantly on medication. Her sister introduced her to naturopaths and Carin started reading about healthier alternatives. Her daughter inspired her to become vegan and life changed dramatically. The next step was a raw food diet, and for the past ten years, she hasn’t looked back.  Her thought is “The bottom line is who are we to think we can improve on what the creator gave to us?” To adjust to eating everything raw, Carin simply replaced everything that pleased her palette in the cooked world and replaced it with a raw alternative.

Carin believes that much of the power behind the raw food diet is in the nutrients, enzymes and, perhaps most importantly, the bioelectrical energy which increases life force and elevates vibrations. During her research, Carin read about Dr. Ann Wigmore and her studies on the effects of cooked and raw food. Carin described Dr. Wigmores research scientifically proved that cancer cells died on living foods, but thrive on cooked food.

Carin tells a story of two guest who came into the restaurant diagnosed with terminal cancer and were told to get their affairs in order and prepare to die. One was pancreatic cancer and the other was a cancerous reoccurring brain tumor. She suggested switching to foods that were full of the life force that she strongly believes exists. He came in a year later with a full head of hair. Joyfully saying he is cancer free and he beat the worst kind of cancer." The other lady was told by her doctor that she was a living miracle not only was she still alive but she was also cancer free!

Dry River Caravan

DRC Dry River Caravan was formed in the fall of 2006 by friends John-Aaron Cockburn and Matt Smith. Fresh out of punk sub-genre bands, the two musicians were inspired to create something based heavily in the traditional music they loved, in particular old time American roots and the music of the Eastern European Romany (gypsies). Their initial experiments explored Klezmer, Celtic and Gypsy swing and they soon caught the eye of the Ottawa music scene; playing Bluesfest, Folkfest and many other gigs in just eight months.

Then, in the late summer of 2008, half of the then six-member line up left to pursue opportunities outside of the city. This gave Smith and Cockburn an opportunity to travel and hone their songwriting abilities. Cockburn and Clarinetist Robin Meyer-McLeod travelled to Eastern Europe and the crow-haunted Carpathian Mountains while Smith explored the arabesque antiquity of Southern Spain. Whether it was accordion in a Transylvanian cemetery or mandolin amongst Moorish ruins, the two musicians continued to explore the various facets of traditional music.

Upon returning from abroad, they reunited and signed aboard both Meyer-McLeod and Upright Bassist Daniel Grewal. They immediately began writing and crafting a new sound with the same commitment to the creation of original, thought provoking and energetic music; steeped heavily in various folk traditions.

Now with the evolution of sound and stage performance well underway, Dry River Caravan is ready to pick up and surpass where they left off. Ready to stir up music lovers both at home and abroad and bring a new tradition to the ever changing world of folk music.
